Dylan Dear Karel,

Thank you for your support of animal welfare efforts in the Berks County region.  I'm sending you this debut issue of Update: Berks County Animal Response Team to make you aware of the great work being done by Berks CART and its volunteers.  This bi-monthly newsletter will keep you abreast of important CART news and training opportunities.

Berks CART is a local extension of the State Animal Response Team for Pennsylvania (PA SART). These Animal Response Teams are public/private/non-profit partnerships intended to provide the volunteers, resources, organization, and financial commitment needed to plan for and respond to disaster of all types and sizes impacting animals in our state and county.

You will only receive this bi-monthly e-newsletter again if you have signed up for the Berks CART email list or if you do so now (by clicking on "Update My Profile" at the very bottom of the page).  Please consider forwarding it to others who might be interested in serving as a volunteer in Berks (or any other county's) CART.  Thank you!

 Mock Emergency Event

Space may still be available to participate in a mock emergency training hosted by Snyder/Union/NorthUmberland CART on October 12, 13, and 14.  If you are an active CART volunteer and are interested in attending this free training event, please contact Dylan Heckart at dheckart@berkshumane.org
Online Opportunities for Required Berks CART Training

Berks CART volunteers have specific training requirements in order to serve.  This training provides some a wealth of information and practical knowledge that will ensure that volunteers are ready to serve in the event of an emergency.  Fortunately, training courses are available online

All current Berks CART volunteers must be fully trained by December 31, 2007 or they will be removed from the active duty list.  If you need to complete any of the required training, you can get links to the FEMA online course by clicking here.

Don't let a couple hours of study get in the way of helping animals when the big one strikes here- get trained today!
Keeping Your Chops Up: Volunteer Opportunities Between Disasters

One reality of volunteering to help during an emergency is that most of the time (if we're lucky) there's nothing to do!  If you are a Berks CART volunteer and want to keep active and keep your animal handling skills honed, consider volunteering at the Humane Society of Berks County on a regular basis.

The HSBC has all kinds of volunteer opportunities ranging from basic animal care to Ani-Meals On Wheels, education, events, and more.  You'll get to work with many other people active with Berks CART and you'll be doing something good for the animals between catastrophes!  Click here to learn more about volunteer opportunities at the HSBC.
