Dear Karel,
All of us at the Humane Society of Berks County hope you had a wonderful holiday season and a happy New Year!  The HSBC has high hopes for 2008:  To continue the steady increase we've seen over the past three years in adoptions, owner claims of stray pets, and sterilization surgeries, and to improve and expand upon the services we provide to animals and their people.  You help make it all possible and we appreciate your generosity of time, funds, and spirit!
When You're Right, You're Right
And the Reading Eagle is right!

We all know that sometimes people try to solve the problem they think is there with the solution they want to work.  We also all know that it is not always the easy or popular thing to really look at the facts and attack a problem that is actually there with a solution that will really address that problem.

pitFor the last two years, the HSBC has been pointing out the problems with Reading's "dangerous breed" ordinance and has been taking a lot of heat for doing it.  From bite reporting problems to misdirected resources to enforcement impossibilities to targeting the wrong population, this well intentioned ordinance has major flaws- flaws that could cost people a great deal of their money and many. many dogs their lives.

The Reading Eagle recently continued in a line of outstanding reporting by Don Spatz and courageous editorial stands by the editorial board.  Spatz broke the story that dozens of State Health Department bite reports had gone unreported to the HSBC, bites that radically altered the percentages of bites by breed.  Today, the editorial staff endorsed attacking the real problem dog population by increasing the licensing fees for the dogs that were responsible for almost 90% of bites- unsterilized dogs.

It's time to attack the real problems with real solutions.
