Reading's Dangerous Dog Ordinance
Increase in bites may activate increased restrictions
According to the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement, dog
bites are up across Pennsylvania. Unfortunately,
Reading and Berks County are no exception. The
recent upturn in the number of dog bites in Reading,
particularly by Pit Bulls, is likely to require that the
City's Dangerous Dog Ordinance be re-activated in
2008. This will result in significant restrictions and
increased costs for Pit Bull owners in Reading.
Since the vast majority of Pit Bull owners are caring,
responsible owners, the HSBC is working hard to
stem to number of bites and keep the ordinance from
impacting good owners. With the full support of the
Bureau of Dog Law and the Reading Police
Department, the HSBC will be conducting extensive,
random license and rabies enforcement sweeps in
the City. All dog owners found in violation will receive
a citation on the spot.
If you live in Reading, help us to make the City safer,
and protect yourself from prosecution, by ensuring that
you have a current, displayed PA dog license and a
current rabies vaccination. Licenses are available at
the HSBC during normal business hours and low cost
rabies vaccinations are available by appointment.
Call 610-921-2348 for more information.
