Dear Karel,

Welcome to the Humane Society of Berks County's Kennel Kapers Online! We hope that you find it useful, informative, and that it will give you a better idea of our efforts to save the thousands of homeless, abused and neglected animals needing our help each year.

 September Furry Friday
Featuring the art of Lynn K. Stimeling

Join us for a late summer Furry Friday Open House and Art Exhibition featuring artist Lynn K. Stimeling. While you are enjoying Lynn's great work, have some food and drink courtesy of our sponsors, Legacy Brewing Company, Barefoot Wine, and Canal Street Pub & Restaurant. As always, you'll get a chance to say, "Hi!" to the animals and if you buy any art a portion of the sale goes to the Humane Society!

You can also get an insider's tour of the upcoming kennel renovations and you can pick up your "I'm Walking!" yard sign to show your support for the Walk. Don't be bashful, bring a friend or three! RSVP's aren't required but are always appreciated at rduffie@berkshumane.org.

Details and an invitation PDF you can forward to friends here...

 Reader's Request
 "Rescued Animal Follow Up"

Our Reader's Request this issue features a successful rescue and highlights a great program. It was two years ago that HSBC staff and volunteers travelled to New Orleans to help with the Katrina recovery and rescue effort. Four homeless dogs were transported back to Reading, where three where successfully adopted (one succumbed to cancer). One of the adopted dogs, Roscoe, now spends his life with Stephanie Gladfelter, who shares this personal note with us:

"I cannot even imagine my life without Roscoe. It is hard to believe that two years ago, he was wandering around a flooded city, sick, and just trying to survive. It breaks my heart to think of him in that condition. His strength has been amazing and the unconditional love that he has provided to my family has been unmatched. Roscoe has been my ultimate friend and protector; he makes sure that I am safe and happy and never leaves my side. He is the happiest dog that I have ever met; there is not a day goes by that he does not greet me while smiling and wagging his tail viciously! I am so grateful for Roscoe and to the Humane Society of Berks County for rescuing him."

Katrina was a reminder that disasters can and do happen. And they can happen here. That's why the HSBC is the lead agency for the Berks County Animal Response Team. Berks CART is here to help ensure that the debacle that followed Katrina won't happen in Berks County. If you are interested in volunteering, providing support for Berks CART, or signing up for the new Berks CART Update e- newsletter, please visit our website for more details.

 American Humane Association National Conference
 HSBC & HLLC presenting workshop

The Humane Society of Berks County is proud to have received an invitation to participate in the American Humane Association's national conference for a second year in a row! This year, HSBC executive director, Karel Minor, will be co-presenting a workshop with Humane League of Lancaster County president, Joan Brown. The workshop, "Combine & Conquer: Establishing Effective Partnerships That Further Your Mission", will highlight how animal welfare groups can better work together to achieve common goals.

Last year, the HSBC was part of a panel presentation as a result of winning an AHA Best Industry Adoption Practices award for our Free To A Great Home program. American Humane Association is an independent national animal welfare policy organization with no ties to HSBC. It holds one of the two major animal welfare national conferences each year.

The Humane Society of Berks County serves all of Berks County and surrounding communities, sheltering 7,000 animals each year. It is a nationally recognized, award-winning, private, non-profit organization funded through donations and service fees. In addition to enforcing Pennsylvania’s animal cruelty laws, the Humane Society offers adoption services, spay and neuter services, humane education, pet behavioral counseling, and help to stray, injured and mistreated animals.

Sincerely,
