Dear Karel,

Welcome to the Humane Society of Berks County's Kennel Kapers Online! We hope that you find it useful, informative, and that it will give you a better idea of our efforts to save the thousands of homeless, abused and neglected animals needing our help each year.

 Thank You!
3,000 Walkers help raise over $100,000!

underdog Just a few years ago we'd have been the underdogs if anyone had claimed we could bring together 3,000 walkers with hundreds more donors from thirty states to raise $100,569 (and counting!), but we did it! The HSBC thanks every single person, company, and organization making this amazing feat possible.

Because of your help we raised needed funds for vital and unique programs like Ani-Meals On Wheels, PetNet, Berks CART coordination, adoption, emergency medical treatment, cruelty prosecution...the list goes on and on. Saving lives costs money and charitable dollars are increasingly hard won. This year's Walk wasn't just fun and successful, it was an affirmation that you join us in our mission to improve the lives of animals in Berks County and beyond!

Our particular thanks go to those raising extra funds for the animals by collecting pledges. For the second year in a row, Quaker Maid Meats The Fast and The Furriest took top Pack honors, raising over $10,000! Liz Hutcheson was our top individual fundraiser. Thank you!

 Reading Pit Bull Update
 Statistics support HSBC position

A terrifying Pit Bull enjoying his day with his terrier friend at the Walk At the request of Reading City Council, the HSBC has provided a statistical analysis of dog bites in the city over the past ten years. The results are amazing! As predicted by the HSBC, the increase in pit bull bites directly tracks the increase in licensed pit bulls in Reading. As the number of pit bulls has increased, so have the number of bites-- but the rate of bites has not increased.

The most disturbing data shows the dramatic trend of newly licensed dogs to be unsterilized and that sterilization status is the biggest indicator of ownership quality. Dogs that are surrendered to the HSBC, dogs that are strays and dogs that bite all have progressively lower sterilization rates (from 50% to 300% lower rates) that the average dog. That's the reason why the HSBC Four Point Plan for a Safer Reading calls for a study of the facts.

Please continue to tell Reading's elected officials that you expect them to base their legislative efforts on the facts, not on anecdote and personal opinion.

 Reader Request: Upcoming Project Update
HSBC kennel renovations slated for winter 07/08

Glass Kennel Examples The next big project for the HSBC's 11th Street Shelter will be the upgrade of the dog kennels. If you saw what we did for the cats last winter, you can imagine what we're going to do for the dogs! Improved ventilation, increased natural light, glass fronted habitats to improve visibility, and noise control are just a few of the ways we'll bring the HSBC's adoption kennels into the 21st century!

If you are on our mailing list you'll be getting details on this project next month. We hope you'll help us reach our goal. Events like the Walk raise money for day-to- day expenses. Capital improvement projects like this rely on specific donor support. If you'd like information on how you can help and naming opportunies for the project, please contact Denise Leininger at 610-921- 2348, ext. 25 or dleininger@berkshumane.org.
