Dear Karel,
We thought Halloween would be a great time to introduce the new face of the HSBC's Kennel Kapers Online!  We hope you like the new look and continue to find it a great source of news about the HSBC and the animal welfare world!

3rd Annual Thanks-For-Giving Volunteer Appreciation Reception
Joni LaVigna Dog Adoption Center Groundbreaking!

It may be Halloween but it's not too early to think about the Thanks-For-Giving Holiday!  No, not that one...the one where we thank our volunteers for giving of their time and energy!  If you are a volunteer at the HSBC, the pleasure of your company is requested on Thursday, November 29, at 6:00 PM.  Join us for some tasty eats and drinks and enjoy the company as we present some fun awards to some of great volunteers (awards will be presented at 6:30).

After the awards, there will be a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Joni LaVigna Dog Adoption Center.  We hope that you will join the HSBC's staff and board as we make this memorial dedication to a much loved HSBC family member.  All are welcome but please RSVP via email to rduffie@berkshumane.org so we can be sure to accommodate everyone.

Help the Animals...Vote!
Elect candidates that support animal welfare

On Tuesday, November 6, you can help animals.  You can vote.

Every single day at the Humane Society of Berks County we save animals, one at a time.  We do it with the help of volunteers and donors, who give of their time and sweat to help the HSBC undertake its mission to help animals and people in need.  But to really help animals in a big way, thousands at a time, not just one by one, we need the help of a group that is sometimes overlooked as the greatest asset animals and animal welfare organizations have: our elected representatives and judges.

Clean Up (and Help Us Clean Up!)
Turn your junk into our treasure through eBay!

ebay

If you are like me, chances are you've stood in front of some pile of things in your house that you just can't bring yourself to throw in the trash and said to yourself, "I should totally sell this stuff on eBay."  Now is your chance and you can make some money for the animals, too!

If you bring your "treasures" to Steve Erianne's Antiques and Artisans at 2802 Perkiomen Avenue, Mt. Penn, he can help you turn your stuff in cash to support the HSBC's mission.  75% of proceeds go to the animals!  Steve is a Certified eBay Trading Assistant, and will coordinate every aspect of the sale.  While the shop's specialty is antiques, you can call Steve to check on other donations accepted at 610-779-6141 or visit his eBay store at Antiques and Artisans.

HSBC to Adopt New Reporting Structure

There is no way to solve the problems facing animals without a clear understanding of exactly what and how big the problems are.  That's why the HSBC has been and continues to be one of the only animal welfare organizations that publishes our incoming and outgoing statistics for anyone to see via the Internet-- the raw and unvarnished numbers.  To learn why, read "Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics" here.

To make these figures even more clear, the HSBC is adopting the Asilomar Accords reporting protocols.  These protocols are being created in Berks County by a Blue Ribbon Panel representing State, County, and local government, the veterinary and animal welfare community, and the public.  On Thursday, November 8 at 6:00 PM, you are invited to the HSBC to get an overview of the Asilomar Accords guiding the panel's efforts and a review of the draft Pet Evaluation Matrix (PEM) and reporting protocols.  You will have a chance to give your input and comments.  To attend, please RSVP to rduffie@berkshumane.org.

The Humane Society of Berks County serves all of Berks County and surrounding communities, sheltering 7,000 animals each year. It is a nationally recognized, award-winning, private, non-profit organization funded through donations and service fees. In addition to enforcing Pennsylvania's animal cruelty laws, the Humane Society offers adoption services, spay and neuter services, humane education, pet behavioral counseling, and help to stray, injured and mistreated animals.

Sincerely,
