Behavioral Counseling
Research into why animals are given up to shelters shows that the number one underlying reason is a behavioral problem. Often, simple behavioral problems can snowball to the point that owners become frustrated and feel powerless to improve the situation.
That is why the Humane Society of Berks County works hard to help provide basic obedience training and behavior modification for pets in the shelter before they get adopted. Better trained pets mean better adoptions.
That's also why the HSBC encourages all pet owners to take advantage of high-quality, positive reinforcement based training programs.
If you are having problems with you pet, contact the HSBC at 610-921-2348 or your veterinarian for assistance or referral services. If you have recently adopted or purchased a pet, call us or speak to your veterinarian for advice on the best way to train you new pet.
Things to remember: Dog training is as much about training the owner/handler as it is about training the dog. The HSBC does not recommend any program that trains your dog while you are on vacation or without your direct presence and involvement. Do not enroll in any program that uses physical coercion, shock collars, etc. Do not use any trainer that cannot or will not provide you with references.
