Who says you can’t teach and old (or young) dog new tricks?
 The same thing goes for old and young people, too.
Good pet owners aren’t born, they’re made. It might be said that most of the job of the Humane Society of Berks County is education. We take that responsibility very seriously. Most of the problems facing pets in our community arise from a lack of understanding of our animals and the consequences of this failure to understand. Homelessness, neglect, pet overpopulation, animal bites, and disease are often a result of ignorance.
The HSBC Humane Education program works to attack these problems by providing much needed education on a wide variety of topics to people of all ages. From basic pet care and dog bite prevention classes offered to elementary students to advanced animal issue seminars for high school students to animal control training for municipal police, the Humane Education program has something to offer everyone.
Our Humane Education staff and volunteers work closely with schools and teachers to provide education programs that are age appropriate, address required content and curriculum areas, and emphasize critical thinking skills. School programs include: Basic Pet Care and Ownership, Dog Safety, The Circle of Compassion, Modern Animal Agriculture & Diet, The Role of Animal Shelters, and more.
Our Speakers Bureau of veterinarians, Humane Society Police Officers, and animal behavior and welfare experts provide interesting and insightful presentations for civic and church groups, municipalities, service organizations, and corporations. Speakers Bureau topics include: Companion Animal Behavior 101; Understanding Violence Towards Animals and People; The Community Touch; Dog Bite Safety and Prevention; Animal Welfare: Past, Present, and Future; Zoonotic (Animal to People) Diseases; and others. Presentations can be tailored upon request.

Our presentations offer a unique opportunity to learn more about the Humane Society of Berks County’s programs while having meaningful discussions with our staff experts. The Humane Society of Berks County has been serving animal needs for over 100 years; we need your help to spread the word about the importance of animal welfare.
Fact: Thousands of animals are brought to the Humane Society every year. How do we help these animals find new homes? How can your organization make a difference your neighborhood?
Fact: The Humane Society of Berks County sees hundreds of companion animals every year with severe behavior problems. What kinds of solutions are available to make your pet a better companion?
Fact: Domestic violence continues to be a problem in Berks County, and nationwide. Part of the solution to this problem is the way we treat our cats and dogs. How is violence toward animals linked to humans?

Take a journey through the Humane Society of Berks County, Berks County's oldest animal organization, and learn how we've managed to serve Berks County’s needs while remaining an industry leader. Audiences will gain access to our expert advice about the importance of a strong human-animal bond in Companion Animal Behavior 101. The humbling reality of animal cruelty in Berks County, and the Humane Society's efforts to make a difference, are covered in Understanding Violence Towards Animals and People. In The Community Touch, learn how Berks County utilizes the humane talents of Society employees to enforce animal ordinances and how home owners' associations can help keep pets safe with their own rules and regulations.
To request a presentation for your organization, please call the HSBC at 610.921.2348. Please allow four weeks before your event to schedule a speaker. Addresses are available from 15-45 minutes long. They must be scheduled through the Humane Society of Berks County by prior arrangement year-round. Volunteer or staff speakers are assigned.
